What are you doing?
I had been a mortgage broker for about 5 years. I was busy as all heck, making money and growing my business.
One day, I was sitting with Mike Cameron, my mentor and my friend, and I asked him, “What happens to my business when I want to retire?”.
I was 31 years old at the time, so retirement was something quite far in the distance. My thought was, “I am killing myself working in my business, but what am I building? What will my business be worth?”.
The answer was, Nothing. When I retired my business would be worth nothing. As the reality hit, my next thought was, “Then why the heck am I doing this?".
I began on a path of discovering how I could build a business that had value. One that another broker might want to buy from me one day.
Mike had always pushed a CRM-a way to save client data and continuously nurture that database to generate repeat and referral clients. I was starting to understand why it was such a powerful tool. A database where there is consistent touch points over time is a valuable database.
I also started to pay attention to the client experience and the power of consistency. When you consistently deliver the same experience and do it on repeat you build a reputation and you build a brand. That has value.
When I focused on becoming a business owner as opposed to a commission salesperson, I was able to make decisions that were not tied to my emotions or my self worth. This mean that I was able to look at my business objectively and make the decisions that would add value to my brand.
I would love to say that the light bulb moment at 31 years old entirely shifted my business and I started to do all the things right away. It didn't. I got caught up in the hamster wheel of doing the things right in front of me, and before I knew it years had gone by and I hadn't made the changes I needed to.
When life forced me to is when I made the changes in my business. When my body and my mind began to shut down from extreme exhaustion and stress is when I shifted. I wish it didn't have to be that way but for most of us we don't break patterns and habits (even destructive ones) until we are forced to.
I challenge you to look at what you are doing in your business today and ask yourself these questions:
- Do I run my business like a business or am I commissioned sales person?
- Do I want to be doing the same thing in my business 5 or 10 years from now?
- Does it matter to me that I have a business that someone might want to buy one day?
- Is the sacrifices I am making worth it or is there a better way to run my business?
- What is one shift I could make today that would help me align with my why?
Sit with these questions. Be honest with yourself. What are you building? It is what you want to build?
If you are on the path you want to be, then awesome! Keep going! If you're not it might be time to make some changes.
Let me know what you discover!
