When You Have Zero Motivation

Renee Stribbell • September 7, 2024

When you are working hard in your business, whether it is marketing, networking or doing deals, it can seem like all you do is work. It can become, well exhausting.

There are days where just doing the basic tasks in your business seem like you are pushing a boulder up a hill.

When you are losing potential clients due to the current rate wars and you're wondering how you are going to pay your bills you start to wonder why you keep pushing forward in this business.

I get it. I've been there.

Here is what I have learned over the years and I hope it can help you when you are having those tough days:

  • This will not be the last time we see a rate war cycle. It has happened many times over the years when the banks and mortgage companies are trying to fill their lending buckets. It will ease off but it isn't fun when you are immersed in it. Be quick to recognize if you can't compete, advise the client in an revenue producing way (see email from last week) and move on.
  • Stick to your process. If you don't have one, get one. It doesn't matter if you have done 2 deals or 200. Putting a client experience journey in place will help solidify your long term business success.
  • Plan a day or an afternoon off to completely step away from your business and do something just for you. It might only be a 2 hour break, but leave your phone in your house or your car and go do something fun. For example, plan to take an extra long lunch this Thursday and go for a nice lunch with a friend and then go get a massage. Just looking forward to that blissful 2 hours can motivate you for the week!
  • Plan your next holiday, then find a broker in your organization that can be a vacation buddy. Interview them and ask them some questions on how they do their business and how vacation coverage will look (splits etc). Then test each other out for a 2 day short vacay to see how things go. Taking a holiday as a broker can be very scary if you are worried about what will happen when you are gone.
  • Build your business so that it aligns with your values instead of fights against your values. Saying yes when you know you should have said no is not only demoralizing but exhausting. It will destroy your motivation.

If you are in the business for the long term you need to find ways to keep going when it gets tough. This business is amazing and fun but can also suck the life out of you if you let it. Most of us love the thrill and intensity that this business can provide but I can tell you as the years wear on the excitement can fade and turn into anxiety and exhaustion if you do not take care of yourself.

As always I am here for you. Reach out if you need!
