Say Yes - It Could Propel You Forward

Renee Stribbell • October 30, 2024

Opportunities come at us all the time, and some can feel intimidating, exciting, or even like they’re pushing us out of our comfort zones.

But here's the thing: when we say “yes” to the right opportunities, ones that align with our goals and values, we open doors that lead to growth, impact, and a new level of success.

In the commencement speech by Shonda Rhimes that is shared below as well as in her book, The Year of Yes, she talks about her year of saying Yes to the things that terrified her.

Her journey wasn’t just about adding more to her plate; it was about saying yes to things that added value, purpose, and growth to her life.

In the same way, for us in the mortgage world, saying “yes” means embracing aligned opportunities—those that resonate with our mission to help clients, build trust, and create lasting value.

This week, I got an email from a college asking me to be one of the presenters in their Financial Literacy week. I replied Yes before I even finished reading the email. I knew I would be able to figure out what to present and put it together by mid-November when I would need to present the session live.

I didn't even give myself the option to say No. I didn't give myself enough time to talk myself out of it.

Here are some tips on how to start saying Yes:

1. Align Yeses with Your Values

Not every opportunity that comes your way will serve your vision. Consider each opportunity thoughtfully. Ask yourself, "Does this align with my mission, values, and goals?"

2. Say Yes to Growth

Sometimes, saying Yes to an opportunity is really uncomfortable and our first thought is to say No.

Whether it's presenting to a group of realtors, speaking at an event, or implementing a new strategy, growth requires doing those things that make us uncomfortable. If it aligns with your vision, go for it.

Like Shonda said, saying Yes opened up unexpected paths that enriched her life and career.

3. Embrace Change with Confidence

In our industry, change is constant. Say yes to opportunities that allow you to adapt and evolve. Whether it’s a new tool or an innovative way to connect with clients, your openness to change can be the key to staying relevant and valuable.

4. Look for Yeses that Build Relationships

Success in this business is all about people. Look for the yeses that strengthen relationships, whether it’s with clients, colleagues, or your community. These moments of connection can be the foundation for long-lasting success and fulfillment.

So next time you’re presented with an opportunity, pause and evaluate: does it move you closer to your goals? Is it in alignment with your mission?

Saying yes can be transformative, especially when it’s intentional and authentic to you.

Cheers to your journey of aligned yeses and the incredible growth ahead!
