Boundaries are in the pause
Last week I shared on the importance of Self Care and how to implement it in your daily life.
As a continuation of that topic, I wanted to dive into the importance of setting (and implementing) healthy boundaries in our personal and business life.
We have all heard this and we know we need to do it. Let's be real though-when you're in business, especially in your first 5 years, saying no is terrifying and it's really hard to say no without feeling guilty.
I was listening to the Mel Robbins podcast and her guest was renowned psychiatrist Dr. Pooja Lakshmin. Dr. Lakshmin shared on the signs that you lack boundaries and how this can affect your life.
What really stuck out for me was when she said that the Boundaries are in the pauses. When you pause, this is when you make the decision you chose to say Yes, No or Negotiate.
Yes and No are very definite. There are some instances, however, that your answer lies in the gray area and you have the opportunity to negotiate. If you could negotiate some of the terms you would say yes. If you cannot then you say no.
For example, you make the decision to work late on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
A client wants to meet with you in the evening. In this case you could say, “ My next evening appointment is next Tuesday. Does that work for you? If you want to get the process started sooner we could have a phone call on your lunch break tomorrow. Let me know what works best”. This way it isn't a hard no but you are still staying within your boundaries.
Imagine being in control of your decisions. Imagine having the courage to say no when you need to.
Take a minute to pause when faced with a decision on whether to say Yes, No or Negotiate to this week.
Let me know what you discover! Remember, boundaries actually allow to take the emotion out of the decision.
